Announcements for Dec. 29 - Jan. 4

Life Groups--If you have not yet joined a LIFEGroup, now would be the perfect time to sign up. Groups will be starting up in full force again after the first of the year, and since we’ll be starting into a new book (Leviticus) it would be a perfect time to join in. If you are interested, simply tear off the portion in the bulletin and list your contact information and best available nights (anything but Monday or Saturday). Then, either place the sheet in the offering plate or place it on the main desk in the office. Someone will then contact you. It’s that easy!

Biblical Counseling--Would you like to be better prepared to give brothers/sisters in Christ Biblically sound advice? Would you like to search the Scriptures to help you weed out all the noise from a secular society? Would you like to grow in the knowledge of the Scriptures and gain the wisdom to see how it impacts your daily living? Steve Short at Beamsville Christian Church is offering an excellent class on Biblical Counseling. The class will meet every other Thursday evening, starting January 22nd. If you are interested, grab a brochure off the wooden table. Scholarships are available from our church to help offset cost. (Contact the church office if interested.)

Elder Leadership--As we mentioned in Sunday School about a month ago, the Scripture does not teach a distinction between elder and pastor. Therefore, it is our desire as elders to serve the church body as a team of pastors. Also, we realize that having two pastors (Jason Bradshaw & Matt Strader) who are not considered elders is probably inconsistent too. In order to be more Biblically consistent, we are presenting Matt and Jason before the church for “elder review.” Please examine 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 in light of their lives. Then, speak to an elder about their shepherding.

Baptism--A few people have expressed their interest in obeying the Lord through water baptism. If you have trusted Christ as your personal Lord and Savior but have not followed through with water baptism, please contact the office to set up an appointment.

Men's Fellowship--This Saturday, January 3 at 7 am, we will be having our first Men's Fellowship of the year. The theme for the week will be "Becoming a Man of Prayer" as Monty Stump will lead us in our discussion. As always, a full breakfast will be provided.

Men’s Ministry--Starting February 9th, we will be launching a new aspect of our Men's Ministry. Come join with other men, every other Monday night, for a study of the Book of Romans as well as a time of equipping to better serve our wife, children and our church. Keep your eyes open for more details to come!

Women’s Study--Starting February 19, we will be studying, “Becoming God’s True Woman” by Nancy Demoss and “Feminine Appeal” by Carolyn Mahaney. Both books have similar topics and compliment each other. You will be contacted for cost of class. Go by table in narthex to sign up. Deadline is January 4.

Attention Ladies--Overnight Retreat on April 17 & 18, at The Golden Eagle Retreat Center, Palestine, OH. See fliers on table in narthex for more details.

Elder Study--We will be offering another "Biblical Eldership Class" every other Monday night. Class will begin February 16th @ 7pm and will run through August 3rd. If you are interested, please fill out the tear off portion of the bulletin and place it in the offering, or on Sonda's desk.

Welcome to Grace--Are you interested in knowing more about Greenville Grace. Perhaps you've been coming for a while and would like to determine if Grace is your permanent home. Then we recommend the "Welcome to Grace" Class. This class will meet at 6:30pm on January 11, 18 & 25 (each class builds on another, so all three are necessary). If you would like to check out this class, please fill out the tear off portion of the bulletin and place it in the offering or on Sonda's desk.

Grace’s Snow Policy--Wondering what we will do in case of a major snowfall? Our current policy is, unless there is a Level 3 warning out (making it illegal to travel on the roads) we will meet here for those who can make it. If we make any changes or cancellations, we’ll do our best to get it posted on local media outlets, but a few little flurries aren’t going to scare us away. Besides, if we all got snowed in at the church, can you think of a better place to get stuck?

Dominican Update: Next 1.5 Days

Internet is very difficult to come by, so there may not be another update on the blog, or it may not come until Friday afternoon.

TUESDAY--Bob, Mike & Aaron Fourman and I traveled around to a number of villages. We visited with pastors and with people who were there in the villages. It was a wonderful time and was certainly humbling to see these faithful men and the challenging circumstances they live in.

As we traveled all day, I realized the Nilsens and Wolfes are not exaggerating when they describe traffic here. Basically, there are no traffic laws (at least not enforced). There aren't even traffic guidelines (since you don't know what you'll see). You could possibly call them "traffic concepts," but that may be to generous as well.

The evening marked the kick off to the baseball clinic. There are nearly 260 men here specifically to serve in the baseball clinic this week. There is a morning session for us men, then the clinics, then an evening session as well.

WEDNESDAY--I'm writing this at 1:30pm Ohio time, so much of the day has not happened yet. However, this morning I had the opportunity to teach pastors and ministry leaders. We started at 9:00am and wrapped up at 1:00pm. It was such a blessing!!! These brothers and sisters are hungry for the Word and are asking some very good questions. Bob was my translator today and he did an excellent job. Once again, I was humbled that I don't really know english well, making Bob's job all the more difficult.

Tomorrow I will preach in a church and Friday I will preach in a brand new church plant.

It was such a joy today to see much of what we talked about from 2 & 3 John living out before me in these brothers and sisters. We have Dominican brothers who are faithfully doing the work of ministry whom you've never met, yet they are helping us fulfill the great commission as well.

Keep praying! God is doing wonderful things.

I'm praying for you as well, as you Greenville, Darke county and beyond for Christ in ways our brothers and sisters here can't!

Dominican Republic Update

Here's a quick look at our itinerary today:

4:00AM—woke up
4:30AM—Mike/Linda Fourman pick me up for airport
7:00AM—Dayton to Georgia flight
10:30AM—Original departure time for Santo Domingo
1:00PM—Adjusted departure time for Santo Domingo
2:30PM—Revised Adjusted departure time for Santo Domingo
3:50PM—Actual departure time for Santo Domingo
6:45PM--Arrived in Santo Domingo

It was all worth it though, just to see the smile on Bob and Ana's faces as we came down the terminal.

While the airport dilemma creates a bit of a frustration (fuel line leak), it really is amazing that God has granted man the ability to fling a giant scrap of metal in the air and keep it up there. We know, it is not really the aviation mechanics, but it is Christ Himself who holds all things together and allows us to defy gravity and make up lost time. Imagine the length of this trip if I had to ride in a vehicle to Florida, only to board a ship and head for the the Dominican. It really is quite incredible that I was in Greenville yesterday morning and will be preaching this Sunday at home again (Lord willing).

If you'd like to pray for the trip I can give a little more of the detail:

Tomorrow--riding around with Bob and Mike and seeing much of the ministry
Wednesday--teaching the Timothy class (I am SOOOOOOOO looking forward to this!
Thursday--Preaching in a church
Friday--Preaching in a new church plant
Saturday--heading home

Of course, all of this schedule is really in the Lord's hands.

God is Good...

In the midst of trials, or through the trials?

Read this email from Bob Nilsen (our partner for the Great Commission) and see:
One wonders some days if it was even wise to get out of bed. Know what I mean? Even as I brush the spider off my leg and put my foot on the ground, it’s going to be a bad day. As I sit sipping my coffee, only slightly blurry eyed, watching an endless trail of ants, I wonder ‘what part of my life are they carrying away this time?’ God is good.

My mind goes back to the night before when Anna and I were playing Scrabble and heard a strange sound outside out apartment door (Which is really bad ~~ since Tim and Evelyn are in the States, it can only mean a burglar). It was a thief. The burglar entered thru a window in the hall between our apartments. I rush out into the hall with a large stick to confront the perpetrator. With Anna cringing behind the door, I maneuvered myself into the right position and finally bludgeoned the B&E artist with a 4 ft. piece of board! Our God is good.

Having downed a rather large cup of coffee, I drive to the clinic. I think the car feels a little ’loose’ in the backend. After getting out of the car I note I have a flat tire. ~~Sometime back our bus had 6 flats in 8 days!!~~ The problem with this flat tire is that I have a conference to set up. I have snacks to prepare, sound system to get ready, gas to buy, people to transport. I don’t have time for a flat tire. So I race thru changing the tire and then race off to the conference. Our God is good.

In route I discover I have lost my wallet. I should have hugged my pillow longer-like all day! So I call Anna and have her cancel the bank cards, and start trying to figure what else I have lost. How much money was in there? Didn’t I just go to the bank? Oh, no, my wallet was full. God is good.

Well, that was last week. Maybe this week will be better. This week is our anniversary and both of our birthdays. Monday, 36 years to the day. Ah, marital bliss. As a dutiful husband I turned my phone to vibrate. No interruptions. Anna and I are enjoying the shore line drive to the capital. The phone begins to vibrate and I am undistracted as we talk and enjoy one another’s company. It vibrates again. I ignore it again. I’m now feeling quite good about myself. I set the phone on the dash. It begins to vibrate non stop. Anna checks. I have a call from two pastors and one Score missionary. Wonder what’s going on? After arriving in the capital and viewing a photo art exhibit in the old city we begin to look at the old fort. My phone is vibrating non stop and I’m considering taping it to my back for a massage. Finally, Anna says: "You better answer that." (I have been a very good husband up to this point, even though every few minutes my fingers would twitch out of reflex trying to answer the phone).

After calling the Score missionary I discover there is something wrong with our storage facility in Monte Cristy. So I call the pastors. It seems a thief cut thru the metal outer door then cut the hardened steel locks to the inner door, many things have been destroyed. Would I come and check things? Did I mention we just emptied a 40 ft. container into the storage building and there was close to $100,000 worth of supplies in there? Many valuable medical items, along with baseball equipment for next week's Annual Baseball Conference and Outreach! Where’s my pillow? God is good?

Yes, our God is good.

Now the rest of the story. The B&E artist? It was the BIGGEST RAT IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE. The stick I beat the critter with caused it to stick to the sticky paper Anna had put out earlier to trap it. (There had been telltale droppings earlier in the morning.) The little vermin! God is good.

The flat tire? The car had had a strange vibration for a couple of weeks and I couldn’t find it. When I got the flat tire-caused by the one of the 10,000 screws on Dominican roadways-I had to check the right rear tire. It seems the steel belts on this tire had separated and the tire had a large bulge. It was due to explode at any time. It took a flat to get my attention. God is good.

What about the wallet? It seems someone picked it up off the street and got on the next bus that passed by. After taking the money, he threw the wallet on the floor of the bus. The driver found it, discovered my SCORE business card inside and called me. The next afternoon he drove it to Score, delivered it and was given a reward. God is good.

All the pesos were gone. But the credit/debit cards were there!! My driver's license and nursing license were there! Along with everything else!! I checked my secret flap and the $100 US was still there!!! God is good.

Oh, and the pesos I had withdrawn from the ATM, Anna found them in my pants pocket while doing laundry a couple of days later. It seems after leaving the bank I put them in my pocket (which I never do!!). God is good.

Having enjoyed our day in the capital, Anna and I decided it would be a wise thing to visit the storage facility in Monte Cristy. After arriving, the pastor apologized and asked me to check the inside to see what might be broken or missing. After checking the building out, nothing was damaged or missing. NOTHING!! God is good.

I’m even wondering what our good God was saving us from by having us cancel our bank cards? Identify theft is huge down here. Even several of our missionaries have had problems. By cancelling and having new cards issued, we eliminated the old numbers. We also took this time to come up with a new plan to avoid using the cards in the future.

God is good.

Announcements for Nov. 10-16-08

VETERANS, AN EVIDENCE OF GRACE--It is a great grace from God that we are able to gather together this morning, with no fear of opposition from our government. The Lord has given us this gift of no merit of our own. This should cause us to pray for those who do not enjoy such freedoms around the world, and pray that our brothers and sisters remain strong, even in the face of opposition. It should also remind us of lives that have been lost or laid in harms way to preserve such freedoms. Take time, especially this week, to thank a veteran for their service to preserve our freedoms, for they are an evidence of the grace of God in your life!

Wow!

That was the common expression to Chris Cobb's sermon at Grace.

Chris did an excellent job of presenting Christ in Psalm 100. If you were at first service, it was a great blessing to hear this message. However, if you were at second service, Chris had a little extra time and the joy of the gospel simply exploded from his message. I'd encourage you to listen to it. (You can download it by right clicking the link and selecting "save as.")

Even if you were in second service, I'd encourage you to download this message and listen to it again.

Also, can I encourage you to:

--Thank your brothers and sisters from Bible Fellowship for letting us "borrow" Chris for a week.

--Thank your brothers and sisters from BFC for all their ministry to people at Grace.

--Thank God for technology and capabilities to "re-listen" to sermons, or hear ones which we missed.

--Thank Jason for being willing to rearrange second service to make sure Chris had sufficient time to preach. It really is a blessing to have a music pastor who desires to give proper time to the teaching from the Word!

Using biblestudytools.com

Question 6 in this week's LIFEgroup Questions asks you to use a greek tool to find the link between 2 John 10-11 and 1 Corinthians 13:6.

Several have asked me to demonstrate how to use the site, so I'm going to give it a shot on this blog. (Click on the pictures to see them larger.)

1. Log on to biblestudytools.com and type in 2 John 1:10-11 under "search"

2. Select a translation (NAS or KJV with Strong's Words if you want to do Greek work), and then hit "find" next to the translation box.

3. Click an underlined word to see its "Strong's page"

4. From this page, you can see the definition, other english words used for translation and see how many times the book is used in each book of the Bible. (Clicking a book will show you all the verses in that book.)

5. The highlighted word will show you how the greek word is used in other passages.

To some, tracing a word back to the greek could seem like a waste of time. While our translations are trustworthy, doing such work can help open the text up further and give you a better ability to understand the author's original intent. (LIFEgroup spoiler alert: Doesn't knowing the same word John uses for "greeting" is also translated "rejoice" give you a better idea what John meant?)

Sharing Grace Ministries - What a beautiful day Sept 13th turned out to be. The forecast had been calling for rain the whole week, but praise the Lord, our God is so much bigger than the weatherman. We prayed for God to give us a beautiful day so that the event wouldn’t be ruined, and did He ever bless us. We want to thank everyone that came out to support our benefit and to help us raise money for missionaries. The kids had a great time in the tractor pull, cornhole and the relays, winning trophies and gift bags full of prizes, plus when they weren’t playing games they were enjoying jumping in the bouncy house. The adults were enjoying themselves in the cornhole tournament and the trap shoot, taking home medals and winning door prizes. What a great time of fellowship we had that day, with it all ending with a Spaghetti dinner. We want to praise the Lord for helping us raise over $870 of support; without Him we would have nothing. Thank you again to all who came and supported us.

For His Glory,

Jeff and Tammy Dietrich

Are Enemies of God Loved by God?

When we think through being Biblical as we speak to people, these kind of questions invariable come up.

Here's a great article to check out. (Though I can't vouch for the 68 comments...yikes!)

Not only is the answer solid, it's a great example of proper exegesis to come to a Biblical answer.

Do You Care What Christ Thinks of the Church?

Sam Storms's latest book is To the One Who Conquers: 50 Daily Meditations on the Seven Letters of Revelation 2-3. I'm halfway through the book, reading it devotionally, and have appreciated it very much--especially because Storms models for me the way to meditate on God's instruction day and night.

Here was one section in particular I found helpful (pp. 30-31), commenting on Jesus walking among the seven lampstands (Rev. 2:1):
He is present in and among his people. He guards and protects and preserves the church. He is never, ever absent! No service is conducted at which he fails to show up. No meal is served for which he does not sit down. No sermon is preached that he does not evaluate. No sin is committed of which is he unaware. No individual enters an auditorium of whom he fails to take notice. No tear is shed that escapes his eye. No pain is felt that his heart does not share. No decision is made that he does not judge. No song is sung that he does not hear.

How dare we build our programs and prepare our messages and hire our staffs and discipline our members as if he were distant or unaware of every thought, impulse, word, or decision! How dare we cast a vision or write a doctrinal statement or organize a worship service as if the Lord whose church it is were indifferent to it all!

Do you care “What Christ thinks of the Church”? Or are you more attuned to the latest trend in worship, the most innovative strategy for growth, the most “relevant” way in which to engage the surrounding culture? Yes, Jesus cares deeply about worship. Of course he wants the church to grow. And he longs to see the culture redeemed for his own glory. All the more reason to pray that God might quicken us to read and heed the “words” of Christ to the church in Ephesus, then, and to the church now, whatever its name, denomination, or size. It obviously matters to him. Ought it not to us as well?"

Sarah Royer Baptism

The following was Sarah Royer's testimony which she gave during her baptism:
I am so thankful to have this opportunity to stand before you today and confess my love for the Lord. My excitement for the Lord has been bubbling up inside and is now able to be exposed for all to see, and I am so thrilled to express that to all of my brothers and sisters in Christ.

The Lord patiently waited for me through many troubled and lost years, but experiencing those years has made me so grateful to be a witness to Gods grace. He forgave me long before I was able to forgive myself for not only the pain I must have caused him but for the pain I caused my family and myself. God sending Jesus here to die on the cross is truly the only way I am able to stand here today with forgiven sin.

Everyday I strive to be more like Christ, and although as long as I live on earth I, nor anyone else, could ever be as amazing as him, my heart has grown to love the Lord more every minute.
Paul writes in Philippians 3:12, I do not mean that I am already as God wants me to be. I have not yet reached that goal, but I continue trying to reach it and make it mine. Christ wants me to do that, which is the reason he made me his.

My walk has only begun and it is my prayer that all of you who know Christ will hold me accountable, will teach me all they know, and that we encourage one another in this amazing journey with our wonderful Savior.

Colossians 3 :2-3 reads, Think only about the things in Heaven, not the things on earth. Your old sinful self has died, and your new life is kept with Christ in God.

Abbie Holsinger Baptism

The following is Abbie's testimony, which was read at her baptism Sunday:
I was raised in a loving Christian home and was taught that Jesus paid for my sin by dying on the cross, but I've had a lot of doubt and never fully excepted it. After years of searching and trying to live for myself. Thanks to my friends and family through their love and prayer I have come to realize that without Jesus my life is nothing. That it is the least we can do to live our life for him. That by his Grace alone we are forgiven. And the only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ. So this spring I gave my life to Christ. And I am here today to be baptized because I have taken up my cross and I am following him. So that I may have eternal life with my savior Jesus Christ. Psalm 100:3-4: Know that the Lord himself is God; It is he who made us and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name.

Colin Yost Baptism

The following is Colin's testimony he gave during his baptism this Sunday:
I have been raised in a Christian home with parents who loved me and taught me about God and His love all of my life. I have known about Jesus for all of my 16 years.

About two years ago I realized that just knowing who Christ is wasn’t enough; I needed a personal relationship with Christ. I needed to really know Him. I confessed that I was a sinner; I needed Christ and His redemptive power of the Cross to wash and make me clean.

Titus 3:4-7 says “But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that being justified by His grace we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

I have submitted to Christ and His finished work on the cross. I believe that I will never be good enough or be able to do enough for salvation, that it is my faith in Christ and nothing else that saves me. It is this same faith that makes me part of His body.

I want to be baptized to show the world that my belief in an awesome and powerful God is real, that He will love me even through the process of growing in His grace. Baptism, for me, makes me accountable to other believers because it is an outward confession of what is in my heart.

Haitian Art

Art, Mindy and Ryan Pavelski attended Greenville Grace while Art was between pulpits. Today, he sent out the following email, asking for prayer:
Hello friends,

Some of you may not have heard from me for quite awhile. I would fill you in all the details of life since we last met, but that will have to wait. Let me answer a couple of questions that this email may spark. I am the Senior Pastor of the Evangelical Free Church of Vestal. I have been here for two years. It is a wonderful experience. Our church has a partnership, albeit a fairly new one, with a church in Berard, Haiti. It is one of three EFCA churches that have been planted by Henoc Lucian as a part of Vision of Hope Ministries.

I have a request for a prayer team for me next week. I write this to you because I covet your prayers.

As many of you may already know I am leaving after church this Sunday and going to the Newark airport to leave on a plane on Monday morning to Santiago, Dominican Republic to get a ride from there to Cap Haitian, Haiti. I will be with a team of teachers (Gene Wilson, a missionary with the EFCA, Henoc Lucian, Rollo Casiple Pastor of La ViƱa EFC in Miami, Florida and myself) to teach church leaders from the three churches planted by Henoc on teaching and preaching techniques. I praise God for the opportunity to do this. I would definitely like you to help me on this trip by joining a prayer team. I have attached a tentative teaching schedule so that you know what is going on. Here are some specific prayer requests:

--That I go well prepared (mentally, physically and spiritually)
--Safe travel (I will be crossing an international border between Dominican Republic and Haiti) there and back
--Safety while there for the teaching team
--That I am able to teach well
--That the students learn well what we are trying to teach
--Good communication between the teachers and the students (I think Gene, Rollo and I will have an interpreter, I also want to be available after class to answer questions and I’ll need an interpreter)
--Stamina for the week
--Good relationship between all the teachers (we are all strangers to each other at this moment, except for Henoc)

That’s a lot of stuff to begin with and I hope that God adds more to your mind and spirit if you wish to join the prayer team. All you need to join the team is to respond to this email and say, “Sure, Pastor Art, I’ll commit to pray for you next week.” If you would like to choose a specific day and tell me what day that will be I’d appreciate it, but it’s not necessary. Thank you in advance for being part of my prayer team! (And parents, let your kids know about this request, maybe one of your children would like to pray for me, thanks!)

In Him and for His glory,
Pastor Art Pavelski, Senior Pastor
Evangelical Free Church of Vestal
